Upcoming Competitions

Next weekend sees the start of the Turkey Trot competitions. These are open to all sections. The first 4 are singles stableford and in addition to the sweeps which are paid onto winners purses as usual, the best 3 over the singles series will also win: 1. meat voucher, 2. whiskey, 3. wine. The singles are followed by a 4BBB pairs then a 4 person (best 2 from 4) team.

The Winter Leagues starts on the 26th November and run through to the end of March 2023. These are Singles Stableford and are open to all sections, as usual there are two separate leagues for Saturday and Sunday with points awarded for finishing position each week (15 down to 1 Sat & 10 down to 1 Sun), best 8 count.

The course played through the winter depends entirely on the weather. As long as conditions allow we will play the normal tees but if the weather makes this no longer viable we will use the 'Yellow Winter' course or the 'Yellow Winter Alt' course (back 9 twice). Both these courses are rated so, provided conditions allow, singles competitions will be qualifying for Handicap purposes.

Winter Course Plan 2022/23

The winter plan below is an outline of the works to be carried out on the golf course over the next few months. The works listed are not in order as they are all weather dependent and will change depending on how wet the golf course becomes.

Drainage will be the first works to be carried out while the course is hopefully at its driest. Tree work and bunker work can be carried out if the course becomes too wet. Leaves will be blown and cleaned up as we go through Autumn. Aeration to greens and tees will be carried out as needed.

  • Bunkers - re-shape to take the shelf off a lot of the bunkers that has appeared due to the continuous edging back of bunker surrounds, add drainage where needed, check sand levels and add new sand where needed. Re-turf sides. The worst greenside bunkers will be worked on first due to time scales and this work will be ongoing.
  • Drainage - The 4th and 9th fairways to have more drains installed into landing areas using drainage machine. Each drain will be gravelled then sanded to the top. This will add to the drainage that was installed last winter and will help dry up some of the worst areas.
  • 15th Green - New Drain installed to the right side of the green that is currently GUR, the right side of the green levelled to take away the low area where water gathers. The banking to the right of green to be softened off to allow better mowing and a fairer shot into green.
  • Tree Pruning - prune trees and branches around tees that are overhanging and causing issues to the turf health with shading. Leylandii trees/hedge to the left of the 1st fairway to be halved in height to allow a fairer shot towards the green from the left side of the fairway. Tree copses thinned where needed.
  • 2nd green - The fringe to the rear of the 2nd green is very wet and soft so area to be lifted, all the thatch and clay dug out and replace with good rootzone then re-turfed.
  • Driving Net - Grass Area below the clubhouse to be levelled and driving net erected. That area is deemed to be the best site for net as it does not interfere with anyone teeing off the 1st or 18th tees.
  • Irrigation - lift and level up irrigation heads around the course.
  • Car Park - install a new drain to the top corner of the car park to stop the water flowing across the surface.
  • Machinery - Service and sharpen all machines ready for the start of the season.
